Safe Communities
The Alleghany Highlands – and the entire labor shed – is a safe place to live and do business. The violent crime rate per 100,000 people for the labor shed is 65.9, well below the state and national rates. The region’s murder rate is just 1.4, less than a third of Virginia’s rate of 4.6. The motor vehicle theft (a good indicator of a community’s relative safety) is 55.4, while Virginia’s is 131.8 per 100,000 people.
