Road Trips
Pack the car and head out for a day’s adventure. There’s a lot of history, luxury, good food and fun within a short drive of the Alleghany Highlands.
Two of America’s favorite resorts, The Homestead and The Greenbrier, are less than an hour away. The Homestead in Hot Springs, Virginia offers spa services – fed by natural hot springs; championship golf courses; skiing, snowboarding and ice skating; fly fishing, skeet shooting; hiking; horseback riding, and more. The Greenbrier, located in White Sulfur Springs, West Virginia, also offers spa services – fed by its famous sulfur springs; falconry; golf; outdoor activities, and West Virginia’s premier casino, the Casino Club.
Paint Bank, Virginia is a different kind of getaway. Less than an hour away in northeastern Craig County, the tiny crossroads has become a destination. The Swinging Bridge Restaurant, located in the Paint Bank General Store features country style, homemade meals and local buffalo meat! The charming Depot Lodge welcomes overnight visitors.
An hour’s drive east in Interstate-64 lies historic Lexington, Virginia. Home to both Washington & Lee University and Virginia Military Institute, Lexington’s vibrant downtown features boutiques, galleries and a variety of dining experiences.
Roanoke, Virginia, the region’s largest metro area, is about an hour south of the Alleghany Highlands. It’s a regional shopping destination – featuring a large regional mall, numerous other shopping areas and the historic Roanoke City Market. Restaurants, nightlife and arts and culture, such as the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra make the trip worthwhile.
Wineries make great day trips. Virginia has a long tradition of winemaking (started by Thomas Jefferson) and the western Virginia region has seen a growth in the number and quality of wineries.
